The Government of Pará is intensifying infrastructure works in Belém as part of the preparation for the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 30), which will take place in November this year. The interventions being carried out extend across several neighborhoods and districts of the capital of Pará, such as the island of Mosqueiro, where 6.38 kilometers of roads have already been paved. In total, 12 streets of the "bucolic" island are receiving a drainage system for rainwater and asphalt, directly benefiting about 40 thousand residents.

Located 75 kilometers from downtown Belém by land, Mosqueiro is one of the main tourist destinations of the capital and receives visitors throughout the year. With the approach of COP 30, the community's expectation is that the event will open up numerous opportunities for new businesses and generate local development. The urban mobility works contribute to improving traffic, offering more convenience for both residents of the island and tourists.

Among the already paved roads are Rua Vasco da Gama (TR1 and TR2), Alameda Agostinho Trindade, Alameda Elna Trindade, Rua Almerindo Trindade, Alameda São João, Rua Jardim Maués, Estrada do Marahú, Rua Stélio Maroja, and Rua Comandante Ernesto Dias.

A resident of the island for 20 years, teacher Luana Maria Silva highlights the positive impacts of the improvements. "Now, the population and vehicles can transit with dignity. Access for police vehicles, ambulances, and garbage trucks has become possible. These investments were highly anticipated and are progressing. In addition to benefiting residents, they help to better welcome visitors who always boost the local economy," she states.

The interventions include asphalt paving to improve traffic conditions, construction of accessible sidewalks, horizontal signage for road safety, and installation of rainwater drainage systems, essential for the proper drainage of rainwater.

The state secretary of Public Works (Seop), Ruy Cabral, emphasizes the government's commitment to improving the quality of life for the population. "In addition to Mosqueiro, other districts and neighborhoods in Belém are already experiencing the benefits of investments in asphalt, which are a result of the realization of COP 30. These works represent another opportunity to meet the needs of people who suffer from mud and dust," he highlighted.

The paving works are funded by the State Government and the Federal Government, through Itaipu Binacional. In total, 102.4 kilometers of roads will be paved in various locations in the capital and the Metropolitan Region, as part of the legacy that COP 30 will leave for the urban infrastructure of Belém.
