The Pará Sanitation Company (Cosanpa) has intensified preventive services in some municipalities in the western part of the state, in light of the rising water levels of the Trombetas and Tapajós rivers. The goal is to ensure that water supply is not compromised, even with the impacts of rising water levels.

The actions focus on the municipalities of Oriximiná and Itaituba, where water is sourced directly from the rivers. Among the main services is the reinforcement of monitoring the intake structures, preventive maintenance on equipment, and technical adjustments in the distribution networks, especially in areas with a higher risk of flooding.

“In addition to all the care with the structure and equipment during this flooding period, we carry out water treatment with chlorine gas and aluminum sulfate. This way, we maintain the quality of the supply even in the Amazonian winter,” informed the Operations Supervisor of Cosanpa in Itaituba, Ivanilde Farias.

Flood alert - To maintain control of the work, given the river levels, Cosanpa's technical teams monitor the assessments made by the Civil Defense in each municipality. In Oriximiná, there are 49 centimeters left for the Trombetas River to reach the flood alert level, which is 8 meters and 50 centimeters.

According to the Civil Defense coordinator in Oriximiná, Paulo Paixão, “the monitoring done every day on our measuring gauges and at the data collection station of the Geological Service of Brazil (CPRM), today (28), indicated that we are at 8 meters and 11 centimeters. We still have the first days of May, where we may exceed our alert level.”

Deep wells - In other municipalities of western Pará, such as Santarém, where water is sourced through deep wells, Cosanpa has also intensified preventive measures. Technicians carry out periodic maintenance on the wells, monitor water quality, and inspect the pumping and distribution systems.

“In Santarém, even with the direct intake from deep wells, the precautions are no different from other municipalities that require special attention at this time of year, so that the supply service maintains its regularity and efficiency. Water quality monitoring is continuous,” highlighted the Water Coordinator of Baixo Amazonas, Carlos Pedroso.
