The State of Pará registered a reduction in deforestation alerts for the eighth consecutive month in 2023. Data from the Real-Time Deforestation Detection System (Deter) of the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) reveal that, in November 2023, with an area of 96 km² covered by deforestation alerts, the state achieved a 34% reduction in alerts compared to November 2022, when the area was 146 km².

In absolute numbers, the reduction recorded by Pará corresponds to an area of 50 km². Since 2020, Pará has been consistently decreasing its deforestation rates, both in Deter and in the Satellite Monitoring Project of Deforestation in the Legal Amazon (Prodes), which publishes the annual rate of deforestation reduction. In 2023, Pará recorded a 21% reduction in Prodes for the second consecutive year.

With targets to reduce at least 37% of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions from forest conversion and land use by 2030, and 43% by 2035, actions under the State Plan for the Amazon Now (PEAA) of the Government of Pará are carried out through four components: Command and Control (Inspection, Licensing, and Environmental Monitoring); Territorial, Land, and Environmental Planning; Low GHG Emission Socioeconomic Development; Long-Term Environmental Financing.

"Once again, we see a decrease in deforestation alerts, a result of coordinated and persistent efforts by the State Government, through Semas and Segup. We have teams working on the front lines against deforestation throughout the state, focusing efforts especially on the 15 most critical municipalities identified in the environmental emergency decree signed by Governor Helder Barbalho. This progress reinforces the effectiveness of our work and reaffirms that we are on the right path to combat deforestation," declared Mauro O'de Almeida, head of the Secretariat of Environment and Sustainability of Pará (Semas).

Data - In Pará, from January to November 2023, the area covered by alerts is 1,807 km², 47% lower than in the same period of 2022, when the area was 3,418 km². The decrease corresponds to 1,611 km².

In the Legal Amazon, in November 2023, the area covered by Alerts is 554 km², 64% lower than in the same period of 2022. In absolute numbers, this reduction corresponds to an area of 352 km².

From January to November 2023, the area covered by alerts in the Legal Amazon is 4,974 km², 50% lower than in the same period of 2022, when the area was 10,045 km². The decrease corresponds to 5,071 km².
